Language and communication policy
Vandaag in CDS een korte inleiding gehad over de taal— en communicatiepolitiek aldaar. Naar de horende studenten toe was men erg duidelijk: “Do not use your voice in signing class, and sign at all time in CDS!”. Inderdaad, een full sign language environment.
Ook in ons Student Handbook heeft men het over de filosofie van CDS: “The Centre’s philosophy is to view the Deaf community as a social and linguistic minority rather than as a group of disabled people. In keeping with this, the dominant language at CDS is British Sign Language, which is used whenever Deaf people are present, in all locations (i.e. the foyer, coffee room, corridors, meeting rooms, offices, classrooms). All students are required to adopt this philosophy.”
Van sommige mensen hier weet ik nog steeds niet of ze Doof of horend zijn. En dan weet je dat het goed zit. De communicatiepolitiek van CDS is trouwens online te vinden. De moeite waard om eens te lezen.
